The legend goes...
Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink, then tricked him into turning himself into a coin. Jack put this coin into his pocket next to a silver cross, preventing the Devil from changing back. When Jack did finally free the Devil, he made the Devil promise not to claim his soul. When Stingy Jack finally died, God, not wanting such a person in heaven, did not allow Jack to enter. And the Devil stayed true to his agreement with Jack, and did not collect his soul. The Devil did, however, gave jack one burning coal to light his way and sent him off. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth ever since. The Irish refer to this ghostly figure as “Jack of the Lantern,” shortened to “Jack O’Lantern.”
